Castelli 2019 – what to wear for cycling in the Irish winter
Buying cycling gear isn’t cheap and in our current state of climate change it’s difficult to know what to wear when you head out for a spin. Take today for example, it’s cold and windy; one minute the sun is shining, the next it’s teeming down with hailstones. That’s Irish weather for you! Thankfully, Italian brand Castelli have developed a new range – RoS – Rain or Shine. These versatile cycling clothes are great all rounders, working equally well on wet and dry days – so no need to have a number of jackets or bibtights and hope your weather app is right!
Let’s take a look at some of the Winter 2019 Castelli range at The Sports Room.
Castelli Tutto Nano Bibtight
This is a tight that’s good at everything! Castelli have developed a new new Nano Flex 3G fabric which is used in these winter tights. Warm, stretchy and luxuriously soft, they are also highly breathable and to top it off they offer better rain protection due to the Nanotechnology water repellent finish. Drops of water stay as spherical balls on top of the fabric or bounce off without a trace. Magic! Wear this tight all through the winter and for comfort the pro level Kiss Air 2 seat pad is included for long hours on the saddle.
Castelli RoS Winter Jackets
Perfetto Ros Long Sleeve
If you had to pick one jacket, this is the one. For 2019, Castelli have upgraded the Perfetto to bring you a great all rounder. RoS, meaning Rain or Shine means, yes, you have a jacket for all weather. An excellent dry weather jacket you have total wind protection and max breathability at the back. The windproof membrane a the front (Gore-Tex Infinium) keeps you from getting cold due to the windchill but the optimium breathability at the back prevents overheating and moisture accumulation by allowing sweat to escape easily. But, should the rain fall from the heavens you’re protected too. Shoulder seams are taped for extra rain protection and the jacket is made with a fully water proof fabric (Gore-Tex Infinium Windstopper 205 Warm) so you stay dry.
Castelli Winter Accessories
Now that we’ve got your core sorted, don’t forget your hands, feet and head. You’ll enjoy the ride all the more if these stay warm. The good news is that the Ros philosophy extends to Castelli gloves too. Using the same Gore-Tex Infiium Windstopper fabric as before your hands stay deceptively warm in a thin, waterproof glove that still allows your fingers to move. Throw a Thermo Skully under your helmet, a Thermo Head Thingy around your neck, pop on a pair of warm socks, slip on a Slicker Pull On and you are ready to face the elements.
Sustainable shopping is all the rage on the fashion scene and it’s great to see Castelli fitting the bill here in the cycling world. One outfit that can be worn Rain or Shine saves you money in the long run and saves on excessive clothing production – you don’t need a cycling outfit for every weather forecast. Now that’s technical, versatile clothing at its best.
