We’re so lucky to live close to the mountains and more and more of you ladies are realising there’s a great adult adventure park right on our doorstep. If you’re a girl who’d like to give mountain biking a go, let us know at The Sports Room. As soon as restrictions lift, we hope to get a group of #ladieswhoshred back up on the hills. Not sure what you need? Here’s a list of the mountain bike gear that’ll make sure you look the part…and of course they have technical benefits!
Ladies, what you need to start your mountain biking journey
Mountain Bike Clothing for Women
MTB Shorts and Pants
The most important thing you’re going to need is a padded pair of shorts or padded mtb pants. Fox have a great pair of leggings that have a removable chamois and also removable d30 knee pads – these are ideal as you can remove all the bulk and go for lunch with your pals after your spin without all the lumps and bumps. Some women prefer to wear shorts over their leggings – you could go for a liner free short over these ones. Or alteratively, pop on your own leggings and throw a padded short over them. Most of the mtb gear for women we stock at The Sports Room is Fox. They do a great Ranger Pant which has a different feel to a tight but is lightweight with a very flexible material that makes it easier to tackle those trails. Similarly the Defend Pant is a durable trouser, but maybe save this one for when you really have the knack of mountain biking!

Layer up
Mountain Bike Jerseys, Tees and Jackets
Stay away from cotton when you are mountain biking – it’s not great for absorbing moisture and you’ll only end up getting cold. Stick to technical fabrics, designed to wick moisture away. The Fox Ranger Tee has a nice soft feel to it. The Flexair Tees and Long Sleeves are really lightweight and airy – these ones are worn by the top athletes, though if you are prone to getting really warm when you’re out on your mountain bike, these might be the ones for you. It’s bound to rain, so it’s always handy to have a jacket with you. The Fox Ranger Water Jacket does the job nicely – it’s lightweight, breathable and waterproof. The hood will also fit perfectly over your helmet. If it’s cold, layer up with a baselayer – again, no cotton. Choose wool or a technical baselayer.

MTB Protection
It goes without saying that you’re going to need a helmet. If you’re just starting out, something like the Fox Speedframe Helmet would be perfect – it’s one of the most shred ready trail helmets. If you’re getting hooked on mountain biking, you might want to invest in a full face helmet. MTB Gloves are really important too. Not only are you protecting your hands from the branches but you’ll probably appreciate the padding after an hour or two.
Knee guards and elbow guards are a good investment. Fox offer a variety of protection and if your leggings don’t come with padding, it would be an idea to kit yourself out.

Shoes and socks
When you’re mountain biking, the best shoes to wear are flat soled. You might have a pair on your shoe rack at home but if not, something like a pair of Five Tens or Crankbrothers mallet would be perfect.
Your kit bag
If you’re going to be out all day, it’s a good idea to bring a back pack or hip bag. Stow your jacket here and maybe some energy bars or fuel. Pop your phone, lip balm, sun glasses, sun-cream and keys in here too. Essentials to bring along include a tyre lever, a tube (if your tyres aren’t tubeless) and some sealant or a puncture repair kit and pump. Don’t forget your water and have fun!
