RUNNING IN THE RAIN – WHAT TO WEAR

With yellow weather warnings in place for Wicklow this week, there’s going to be rain, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss your regular run. There’s no denying you’re going to get wet, but with the right gear, your run will be more pleasant and you can avoid getting saturated, chafing and other unpleasantness!

WEAR A CAP

A lightweight cap with a peak is ideal for running in the rain. It’ll stop the water teaming down your face, so you can see where you’re going. We’ve a great selection of packable, peak caps at The Sports Room. Something like this Inov-8 Race Elite Cap pictured below will do the job. It’s lightweight, dries quickly and will pack in your pocket if the rain stops. On colder days, you could pop a beanie under your cap to keep your head warm. Also lightweight and packable, these are perfect to keep in your pocket.

DON’T WEAR COTTON WHEN RUNNING IN THE RAIN

Wear tight fitting, moisture wicking tops, tights or shorts. Loose baggy cotton tees only become heavy with the rain and end up sticking unpleasantly to your skin. A technical t-shirt is light, dries quickly and wicks the moisture from your skin so you don’t get cold. For men, the NB Q Speed Jacquard Tee lightweight and comfortable with premium moisture-wicking and fast-drying capabilities. Check out more technical tees here. For women, the NB Impact Run SS tee is a popular choice – also lightweight and moisture wicking.

Wear tight fitting leggings or tights to or if you prefer to run in shorts, NB 2 in 1 shorts for men and women keep you cool and dry mile after mile and help reduce chafing. If chafing is an issue for you, lather on the Vaseline or BodyGlide before you head out.

GET A GOOD JACKET FOR RUNNING IN THE RAIN

Don’t leave the house without a lightweight, waterproof shell jacket! Without doubt, for guys the Inov-8 Softshell Jacket is a winner. Totally waterproof, this jacket will make running in the rain a walk in the park! Also available for women.

If you’re looking for something a bit more lightweight and packable, this NB Accelerate Reflective Jacket will do the trick. We’ve a packable, water repellent adidas run jacket in stock for the ladies.

WHAT ABOUT THE FEET IN WET WEATHER?

It’s difficult to keep the feet dry when running in the rain. Wear a good pair of running socks, like Hilly. They dry quickly and pull the moisture away from your feet. Many of them have double layers for extra protection, so you don’t get blisters. Don’t wear your favourite and best runners when you head out in the rain – throw on your older pair, that you don’t mind getting wet. When you get home, stuff them with newspaper and leave them to dry naturally. This will stop them getting smelly too.

LISTENING TO MUSIC WHEN RUNNING IN THE RAIN

If you like listening to music while you run, you’ll want something to keep your phone dry. Try a water-resistant arm band for your phone. Aftershokz headphones are water resistant so perfect for running in the rain.

Aeropex and Xtrainerz are both waterproof and can be used in the rain, for watersports, and everything in between! However, OpenMove, Air, Titanium, and Bluez 2S are all IP-55 certified, making them water-resistant, but not waterproof. While some moisture is okay, it’s not a good idea to pop them in a bucket of water. Likewise, if you think you’re going to be caught in a deluge of rain with no hat or hood and you’re not using the Aeropex or Xtrainerz, maybe leave them behind. Did you know, as Aftershokz headphones are water-resistant, they are also easily sanitised down? Good to know in this Covid times.

BE SAFE BE SEEN IN WINTRY WET WEATHER

Make sure when you run in the rain that your run gear has hi-vis elements to it – reflective logos or strips will all help. If you’re running in the dark, try a headlamp. Ledlenser offer a range of lumen to suit your needs.
