Irish F-Teamer Mona McSharry has been racing hard and is breaking Irish national records left, right and centre. Herself, Brendan Hyland, Robbie Powell and Jack McMillan are all Funky Trunk F-Teamers and are looking fab in the latest On the Surface 2019 collection, all available at The Sports Room. We wish them and the 36 strong national team the best of luck with their sights set on Tokyo 2020 and beyond.

Do you recognise the Vico Baths in Killiney, Co Dublin for their photo shoot? No Australian blue seas and skies here but the swimwear looks so bright against the Irish backdrop.

Mona started swimming after a close call when she fell into a pool while on holiday. From Mullaghmore, Sligo, Mona primarily swam in the sea before joining the Marlins Swimming Club in Ballyshannon. Her competitive fire was ignited after watching the London 2012 Olympics and she started taking her swimming more seriously. Before long Mona started breaking records and now holds the Irish record for all the breaststroke distances as well as the 50m Freestyle.

Mona’s first international competition was the July 2017 Junior World Championships where she had great success, coming away with gold in the 100m Breaststroke and bronze in the 50m Breaststroke. This year Mona has been kept busy with a number of international meets. The following month, McSharry secured gold in the 100m breaststroke at the World Junior Swimming Championships in Indianapolis USA, in the process becoming the first Irish person to achieve such a feat at the event, with her time, 1:07.10, eclipsing the 2015 Irish record of one of her idols growing up, Fiona Doyle, by five hundredths of a second.

She competed at the European Championships in Glasgow, her first senior event, as well as heading to Buenos Aires for the Youth Olympic Games. It was in Buenos Aires that she managed to break the Irish 50m Freestyle record with a time of 25.42.

With her dedication to training and recent success on the international stage, it’s no surprise that she has her eyes set to represent Ireland at Tokyo 2020. Read more about Mona McSharry here.
