We look at some of the environmentally friendly products on sale at The Sports Room Wicklow Town. With thousands of Irish students joining the global climate change protest this weekend, we look at the steps our suppliers are taking to reduce their carbon footprint…
With so many people taking to the outdoors to get fit, it’s important that we look after our planet so we can continue to enjoy our outside space. We can all do our bit on a day to day basis, using our keep cups for coffee, bringing our own containers for our lunches, not taking plastic bags. But what about the clothes we wear or the shoes we buy? What are companies doing to reduce their carbon footprint. We take a look at some of the brands we stock at The Sports Room and what companies are doing to reduce their environmental impact.
Running Shoes & Brooks Environmentally Preferred Materials
It takes a lot of energy to make running shoes. Brooks have looked at their design and manufacturing process and have implemented changes to reduce the amount of waste produced in the cutting process of materials used in their shoes. But what happens to your runners when they’re worn out? Maybe you take them to a charity shop or pop them in the clothes recycling bin but ultimately many many pairs will end up in landfill. You might feel a little better about it knowing that Brooks used recycled polyester and biodegradable midsoles in their footwear. Their focus is on two of their highest volume materials; polyester and EVA, used in the upper mesh and midsole respectively. For the polyester, they seek a minimum 20% recycled content and all midsoles use BioMoGo DNA that includes an organic, non-toxic additive that biodegrades the midsole 50 times faster than traditional EVA when it comes into contact with anaerobic landfill microbes. Read more about Brooks belief in running responsibly.
This Adidas Cru Tee is created with yarn made in collaboration with Parley for the Oceans: Some of the yarn features Parley Ocean Plastic™ which is made from recycled waste, intercepted from beaches and coastal communities before it reaches the ocean. Now, that would make you feel good! The Saucony Freedom Tee also has a feel good factor. The drirelease® technology is free of chemicals, and offers a patented blend of water-repelling and water-absorbing fibres, to efficiently pull moisture and perspiration away from the skin and push it to the exterior of the fabric where it can evaporate quickly
Eco Frendly Yoga Mats
The Fitness Mad Evolution Eco Yoga Mat combines an excellent grip and is very soft to touch with the stylish double-sided design. This mat provides great cushioning, is very light and easy to transport. Equally importantly the TPE material used in its manufacture is kinder on the environment than normal yoga mats which rely heavily on PVC and is recyclable and degradable.
The Yoga-Mad Tree Rubber Yoga Mat is made from dry natural rubber from the Havea Brasiliensis tree on a 100% cotton mesh. Natural rubber and cotton are degradable and sustainable, making this one of our most environmentally friendly yoga mats. As well as being an eco-friendly yoga mat, the tree mat provides excellent grip and good shock absorption, as well as abrasion resistance making this one of our best mats available.
We are also looking at a new brand of yoga mat from Yoga Design Lab – eco friendly, ethically sourced, natural tree rubber mats. They are also made with recyclyed PET microfiber and water based inks, are free of silicone, toxic glue and phthalates. They look great too – would brighten up any yoga class!
We know there are a lot of hills in Wicklow Town and the surrounding areas! But, we’ve noticed too that more and more of you want to get back on your bikes and ditch the car. An e-bike is a perfect solution. Pop a pannier onto the bike and head into town to do your shopping – a great way to get your daily exercise and feel good about leaving the car at home. We’re looking forward to introducing a fleet of e-bikes for hire very shortly – a great opportunity to explore Wicklow on two wheels. If you’d like to try out an e-bike before you buy, we also have a lovely Cannondale on the shop floor you are welcome to take out for a spin. You’ll feel great when you make it to the top of the hill without having to get off the bike and push it!
